Hi, I'm Matthew Kirwan
I am a lifelong resident of Dandenong District, living here with my wife and twin daughters. I love living here and I’ve been active in community groups all my life trying to make it an even better place to live. That passion for my community led me to becoming a local Greens Councillor for the City of Greater Dandenong between 2012 and 2020.
As a Councillor I was able to:
- increase open space
- plan for better community services and facilities and
- achieve a greater focus on the environment and climate change.
However, I also became aware of the many issues that the State Government fails to address that hold back our community.
- Unaffordable housing in a part of Melbourne where once almost everyone could afford to live
- A public health system under threat and with gaps in what it treats
- No real support for green manufacturing and green jobs in Dandenong South
I grew up in a working class family and went to state schools so I know the importance of a well-funded public education system that can allow a kid like me to thrive at high school and go on to the career of my choice, working as a project manager managing social and environmental projects.
I strongly believe that your postcode shouldn’t dictate your quality of life, and that everyone should have access to quality education, healthcare, jobs and housing.
For too long this area has been taken for granted by Labor. We need a fairer, more liveable Dandenong District. That’s why I am running as the Greens Candidate for Dandenong.
