Working group to discuss the considered homelessness local law changes and plan next steps.
On 19 February 2025, Port Phillip Council unanimously passed a motion to investigate the process for introducing a draft local law amendment.
These local law changes would authorise council officers to fine people for sitting, sleeping or lying on any public land.
We know that homelessness is not a crime, and we cannot criminalise people for struggling to keep a roof over their head in a housing crisis.
We need investment in secure housing and compassionate support services to address the root causes and help people, not fines and punishment.
We are holding a working group session to discuss the considered local law changes, and plan next steps.
Will see you then.
