Port Phillip Council wants to punish homelessness; we want to stop them! Join us to take action.

On 21 May 2025, Port Phillip Council passed a motion to investigate the process for introducing an amendment to the local laws. This local law amendment would authorise council officers to fine and/or confiscate the personal belongings of people for sitting, sleeping or lying on public land.

We know that homelessness is not a crime, and we cannot criminalise people for struggling to keep a roof over their head in a housing crisis. We need investment in secure housing and compassionate support services to address the root causes of homelessness. People need help, not fines and punishment.

So we're going to hit the streets and set up stalls at the local markets to have engaging community conversations, share our concerns about this potential local law amendment and get folks to sign our petition asking Port Phillip Council not to punish homelessness.

Love having a chat? Care about tackling homelessness with compassion? Then sign up to help out at a street stall!

Stalls will be managed by the Port Phillip Greens Homelessness Working Group and volunteers will be given full training and everything they need to have some great conversations.

We'll see you then.
