Exhibition: Attendees will explore "65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art". This significant exhibition celebrates the brilliance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art while directly confronting the dark heart of Australia’s colonial history, proclaiming the vital importance of Indigenous knowledge and agency. It features more than 400 works, comprising rarely-seen artworks and cultural objects from the University of Melbourne’s own collections, 194 important loans from 78 private and public lenders, and six new commissions. Curated by Distinguished Professor Marcia Langton AO, Senior Curator Judith Ryan AM, and Associate Curator Shanysa McConville – in consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and custodians – the exhibition delves into the belated recognition and global prominence of Indigenous art. The exhibition is scheduled to run from 30 May until 22 November 2025.
